Scouting for Renovation items

Once you have figured out what you want to renovate (eg: kitchen, flooring, tiling, bathroom etc) - measure the area you are renovating.

Some tips:
1. Be sure to bring your plans/measurement to enable you to scout for products at best bargain prices.

2. Go to home decor one-stop centers or fairs or exhibitions like HomeDec where they have the exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur twice a year and other states as well.

For visiting exhibitions, you may obtain more ideas as to what is available in the market. These companies will have special offers - but may not be necessarily cheap.

Prior to my renovation, I went to HomeDec in May 2014 and managed to get a good bargain on ceiling down-lights (LED), exhaust fans, food processors, juicers, espresso makers, wood flooring, electrical switches etc. They even have interior designers to decorate your home, if required.

3. If you are looking for laminated wood flooring, the best bet is Inovar Flooring - they provide local hardwood and is of good quality and cheap. During the exhibition they provided a good quotation and have a variety of display items. I got a good bargain with thick rubber underlay installation, instead of plastic.

4. For tiles - you can scout around Jalan Ipoh where they have thousands of designs from you to choose from - like Kimgress Tiles, Whitehorse or Super Ceramic.

5. If you plan a new kitchen and your kitchen appliances may not 'fit' into your kitchen scheme, you may think about changing them - within your budget. Currently IKEA has a good range of Whirlpool products in an appliance package.

For us, we didn't have kitchen appliances except for a basic fridge. So we invested a little for the best deal package (imported and not made locally) with Electrolux (showroom in Republika, Mont Kiara) & Smeg (showroom in D7, Sentul) for aesthetics and quality products. The service is excellent!

6. After figuring out what you need for your home, write down all the quotations you receive and match them against your budget.

7. Once you have matched your budget, contact your local contractors and acquire a quotation on your renovation plans.

8. If you decide to decorate or re-decorate your living space, have your house plans ready and go down to the IKEA store to fix an appointment with their interior decorators.

If you have completed all 8 steps - best to start the renovation according to your plans. Note: Best to clear out the house due to debris and lots of dust!
